Job Description

The coordinator, Open Publishing, assists with growing and maintaining the B.C. Open Collection. In addition, they assist with the production, accessibility remediation, and quality assurance of open educational resources (OER) published by BCcampus.

This position also supports people creating OER by answering questions, attending virtual meetings, and facilitating regular webinars on topics related to open publishing.

This position reports to the manager, Production and Publishing, and works with the OER Production team, other BCcampus staff, and staff and faculty at partner institutions.

Position Outcomes

  • Add, update, and archive resources in the B.C. Open Textbook Collection, following established procedures and processes.
  • Produce and format OER using multiple digital tools, including Pressbooks and various Microsoft Office tools (i.e., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) so that they:
    • Follow the BCcampus style guide and accessibility criteria
    • Display and function well in multiple formats
    • Are copyright compliant and follow citation and attribution guidelines
  • Identify and fix problems with HTML and CSS code.
  • Research technical issues and implement solutions.
  • Respond to questions from authors and editors through email and virtual meetings.
  • Facilitate virtual presentations and workshops on topics related to open publishing.
  • Establish strong, positive, productive relationships.
  • Contribute to a positive, supportive, and strong team culture at BCcampus.
  • Continually expand and update professional knowledge.
    Participate in BCcampus internal learning groups and events.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and LaTeX
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Experience with open, digital publishing processes and tools
  • Strong computer skills and experience using a variety of online communication and task management tools (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Microsoft Office, Airtable)
  • Experience working with digital content, including different file formats and web-based content management systems like WordPress, Pressbooks, and Kaltura
  • Knowledge of copyright and Creative Commons licensing
  • Knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), assistive technologies, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Note that people who have held this position in the past had a range of academic backgrounds. The above list provides specific skills and areas of expertise that will be useful in this position. However, we can provide training and resources as well. We do not expect applicants to know all these things before they apply.

Position Details

  • Duration: One year (September 1, 2022, to August 31, 2023)
  • Hours: 35 hours per week
  • Compensation: $58,354 to $61,903
  • Benefits: 5 weeks paid vacation per year, 5% of salary in lieu of pension contribution, and extended health and dental benefits
  • Location: Vancouver, Victoria, or remote (residency in B.C. strongly preferred)

Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada and possess a valid work permit, if applicable.
