With a number of place-making developments slated to enhance an already thriving urban community, the City of North Vancouver is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and energetic new Director, Planning & Development to join its ranks. The Director, Planning & Development is accountable for the high-level strategic direction and operational oversight of the department and is responsible for the effective and timely delivery of planning projects and program delivery. The Director plays a key role within the Leadership Team to ensure the successful functioning of the department while upholding the highest possible professional and ethical standards.

The Planning & Development function for the City includes long range, community, and development planning and building, environmental sustainability, transportation planning, and construction trade. The nature of the department’s work requires extensive community consultation and interaction, with a degree of public scrutiny. The Director must exercise strong judgment in supervising staff and consultants, managing work programs and budgets, and leading complex projects in consultation with City Council, other departments, agencies, private sector developers, Indigenous communities, and the public.

The ideal candidate is a proven leader with a passion for public service and experience in developing creative strategies for addressing urban challenges in a complex, multi-partner environment. The Director is a creative, innovative, and strategic thinker, an outstanding communicator, and has a demonstrated track record of working collaboratively with a wide variety of partners in order to develop progressive solutions. This individual is a contemporary leader who is well-versed in effecting change to improve operations and service delivery. The Director has a reputation for being an experienced manager who can lead and engage a diverse team of talented professionals and experts, and coach and mentor for future succession.
