Assistant BA Program Counsellor

One (1) permanent, full-time position – Guelph, ON

The University of Guelph is a comprehensive university with an annual enrollment of approximately 21,500 undergraduate and graduate students, including 5,700 students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts (BA). The BA Program works primarily within the College of Arts and the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences. As an Assistant BA Program Counsellor, you’ll play an important role in delivering on these goals.

Reporting to the BA Program Counsellor, you’ll be part of the BA Program Counselling team and, as such, provide academic advising services to BA students. This will involve providing information to students regarding regulations and procedures affecting their academic progress, as well as course selection and planning, advising them on the academic implications of any personal, medical or mental health difficulties, and referring them to the appropriate departments/units on campus when necessary (e.g., Student Wellness Services).

As an Assistant BA Program Counsellor, you’ll also advise faculty and department chairs on policies and procedures, act as a liaison between faculty and students when required, monitor student progress and approve graduation. Other key areas of responsibility include participating in semester-end academic reviews, advising on options for in-semester or post-semester appeals/academic consideration, and participating in recruitment and admissions processes.

REQUIREMENTS

To assume the role of Assistant BA Program Counsellor, you must be a tactful communicator and skilled decision-maker with:

Ÿ  An undergraduate degree in a related field and two (2) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ÿ  Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills.

Ÿ  A high level of diplomacy/tact when working and communicating with students, staff, faculty, and parents.

Ÿ  Proven teamwork capabilities.

Ÿ  Experience with advising/counselling, conflict resolution, or mediation.

Ÿ  Skills in prioritization, problem-solving, and decision-making.

Ÿ  Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.

Ÿ  An understanding of academic programs and the overall student experience.

Ÿ  Knowledge of university policies/procedures, and experience with policy implementation and interpretation.

ASSET:

Ÿ  Familiarity with Colleague or other student information systems.

NOTE: This appointment is regularly performed on-campus but, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be initially fulfilled remotely (off-campus) until the University resumes its regular operations.
